Looking for hands-on ways to teach kids about the Armor of God? This Shoes of the Gospel of Peace Obstacle Course is an exciting and engaging way to teach kids about how we put on the shoes of the gospel of peace and get to carry the good news of the peace of Christ to the world around us.. This hands on study of Ephesians 6:10-19 is aimed to help your family connect, play, learn, and grow in God’s Word together.
This week we are learning about the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace. I don’t know about you, but especially in wild seasons like we are in, I am so thankful for the incredible peace that only Christ brings. God’s peace is so different from the world’s idea of peace, isn’t it? When we believe in Jesus, God’s perfect peace fills our heart and mind and guides us no matter what life brings. Because of the gospel of peace we can walk in freedom. We don’t have to worry or be afraid because God is in control of the whole world.
In John 16:33, Jesus declares that, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” The hope of the gospel of peace — that Jesus has overcome the world, gives us a firm foundation when the storms of life come. Since Jesus himself is our peace, we can be a calming presence even when the world around us shakes. Not in our own power, but in Christ.
Today’s obstacle course activity is an engaging way to remind little (and big) hearts that we are filled with the incredible gift of God’s peace, and we don’t just keep it to ourselves. We get to share and proclaim the hope, peace, and good news that’s found in Christ alone.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A few different pairs of shoes (ones that fit your kids and others that are too big)
- Items to set up an obstacle course (inside or outside)
Before you begin…
Set up an obstacle course inside or outside. You can use pieces of furniture, boxes, toys, etc. Get creative!
Put the different sizes of shoes at the start of the obstacle course.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace Obstacle Course Instructions:
First demonstrate how to go through the obstacle course. Then invite your kids to put on a pair of shoes that are too big for them and head to the starting line. Time your child as they go through the obstacle course with the big shoes on. Repeat with other sizes of shoes that don’t fit if you’d like. For the last time through the obstacle course have your child put on their own shoes that fit well. Time them as they go through the course.
Let’s talk about it: How did it feel to go through the obstacle course with the first pair of shoes that were too big? How about the shoes that fit you well? Was it difficult to walk with shoes that were too big for you? If you timed yourself, compare the times for the two races.
The shoes that fit you well are like the shoes of the Gospel of Peace. They fit well and protect your feet from any potential dangers along the obstacle course. The other shoes that didn’t fit well are like the world’s idea of peace.
We can’t find peace anywhere else because Jesus Himself is our peace (Ephesians 2:14) When we put on the shoes of the Gospel of Peace we can stand on Christ; our sure foundation and are equipped to walk in freedom and proclaim the hope, peace, and good news that’s found in Christ alone.
