Today we are learning about the last piece of armor, the Sword of the Spirit! The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. God’s Word is truth and the truth of God is sharper than any two-edged sword.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12, ESV)

The Word of God will stand forever (Isaiah 40:8). It is a lamp for our feet and a light on our path (Psalm 119:105). The Bible is God-breathed and useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

A Roman soldier’s sword was intentionally small in size so that he could easily fight the enemy with one hand and grasp the shield in the other hand. Just like the soldier’s sword was the perfect weapon for battling the enemy up close and in very small spaces, the Sword of the Spirit is the perfect weapon to fight against and cut through the lies Satan so cunningly speaks to us u close and personal.

After learning more about the Sword of the Spirit I have a new burning passion to prioritize Scripture memorization in our home. Without training we won’t be ready to use the Sword of the Spirit. If we don’t have God’s Word hidden in our hearts, we won’t be able to combat the lies of the enemy when we are out and about. God’s Word is an incredible gift, isn’t it?

Today’s object lesson is an easy visual activity to teach kids that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our paths. You’ll need just a few simple supplies.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. [Psalm 119:105, ESV]

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Flashlight
  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Optional: A clipboard for each child

Whether you choose to do this object lesson indoors or outdoors, make sure that it is completely dark. Once you’re in a dark spot, hand your child a crayon and instruct them that they are going to draw a picture on the piece of paper that’s in front of them.

In the darkness, give them a minute or so to draw a picture on the piece of paper.

Now, pull out a flashlight and flip over the page. Using the light, instruct them to try again on the opposite side of the paper.

Let’s talk about it!

Look at the picture you drew when it was completely dark. Was it easy to draw a picture? Now compare it to when you were able to draw a picture with the flashlight shining light on your paper. Which picture is better? Psalm 119:105 tells us that God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Just like it was really difficult to draw a picture in the darkness, it’s really hard to take the next step when it is dark. God’s word illuminates the path before us and guides us.

If it  was really dark outside, and you were headed on a walk, you probably wouldn’t leave your house without a flashlight. In the same way, we need to bring the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God with us each and every day. Just like the flashlight, the sword of the Spirit equips us to see the path before us and fight the lies of the enemy with God’s truth.
