Summertime, sweet summertime. What comes to mind when you first think of summer? Maybe you have sweet visions of pool-filled days, popsicles on the porch, and exploring fun spots in your city. Maybe it’s long days, late nights, and more time together as a family. Maybe it’s serving others with your kids. I’ll be the first to admit, the first few things are instantly what come to my mind when I think about summer, but this year my heart is stirring to use the slower pace of summer to love and serve others. That’s why I am so excited to share with you Camp Littles and Me: Summer of Service. Today we’re kicking off with simple ways for kids to serve their family.
Summer of Service: Simple Ways for Kids to Serve their Family
So often the need is right smack dab in front of me, but I am so consumed by my to do list, bucket list, or whatever other list I have going on (I see you fellow list maker) that I can’t even see it. This feels so yucky to even type out. But there’s beauty in conviction from the Holy Spirit because it can lead to repentance and heart change.
My challenge for myself (and for you if you’d like to join in) are two simple yet often so hard to flesh out words: look up. In a culture that glorifies distraction, nap time hustling, and busy just for the sake of being busy Jesus is calling us to look up. But not just to look up out of dutiful service or another thing to check off the proverbial box. Oh how contraire! He is calling us to have eyes that notice and hearts that take action because we are compelled by His incredible love.
Have you stopped today to think about what Jesus did for you? What love and sacrifice He showed. I am so quick to forget. Especially on a mundane Friday. But goodness! I am praying to be so radically transformed by His love that I can’t help but love and serve those around me.
Here’s the good news! This can begin within the four walls of our own homes. We can lead by example and show our kids what it means to look up. To have observant eyes that truly see our kids and other people we interact with each day as Jesus does. What Jesus did on the cross should shift our hearts to serve our family, friends, community, and world with radical love.
Rather than spending the summer totally focused on checking off a bucket list or creating amazing memories what if we used this time to love others in a radical way? Now don’t get me wrong, we are big fans of a summer bucket list and there’s nothing wrong with spending time together as a family and creating precious memories this summer. We are most definitely doing both of those things! But what if we didn’t stop there? What if we used the carefree days of summer to intentionally infuse our communities with the love of Jesus? What would happen if we stopped focusing all of our days inward and looked up just long enough to focus outward?
So you might be thinking what exactly is this Summer of Service? I’m so glad you asked! Simply put, Summer of Service is a challenge to help our kids love God and love people. Over the next 8 weeks, I will share a new print every other week (4 prints total) that has simple ideas to help your kids serve and love their family, friends, community, and world. Each print also has a memory verse which is perfect to memorize over each two week period. You can download the first print that’s all about loving your family today.
